All cultures throughout history have placed a great importance to symbols. Long before the development of modern communications, ancient cultures symbols used as a means of sharing information. The ancient Celts left behind a long history of symbolism and art that continues today.
The Celts are still to be the first Aryan settlers in what is now Europe. It is believed that the Celts were driven westward by waves of Germans, Slavs and others. Referred by the Romans as Gaels, the Celts were once the dominant race in what is not Great Britain, Ireland, France, northern Italy and parts of Spain.
The Celts are believed to have reached the peak of their influence in the late third century BC It is a matter of time before the Celts fell to the legions of the great Roman Empire.
Relegated in the extreme north of Britain, including Ireland, the distribution of the Celts into two factions, one dominating Ireland and Scotland. The other sect came to dominate what is now Wales and the rest of Britain. Like many pagan cultures, the Celts were loyal land and had an interest especially in the sun.
There was a general belief among the Celts that all things on earth are linked. No where this belief is more apparent than in the intertwining complex has come to symbolize the Celtic life. We often think that the work of angels or other celestial beings, the work node is now an important in Celtic designs can be seen in paintings, sculptures and jewelry. Celtic knot work jewelry is very popular and requires a lot of artistic skill produce. The delicate weave can be seen in a variety of rings, pendants and jewelry bracelet.
The shape of the cross that dominates the Christian religion is in fact a creation of the Celts and less prior to Christianity for many centuries. In the center of the cross is often a circle, thought to represent unity of nature. Since the sun has played an important role in the Celtic belief system, the circle could also be the sun. The four points of the Celtic cross is supposed to represent the four elements known natural fire, water, earth and wind. Another explanation is that the four points represent the four corners of the earth.
The five-sided star, or pentacle, is another dominant symbol of the history of the Celts and has found its place in the design of Celtic jewelry. The pentacle is widely associated with practitioners of Wicca and other earth worshiping sects. The symbol has been given a bad name by many orthodox religions. Many orthodox religions and assimilated the pagan worship of the Earth with devil worship. Same Today, there are many sects, most Christians that the application of satanic pentagram. The Celts saw the symbol in its true sense, representing different stages of life, birth, childhood, adulthood, aging and death.
Another popular form seen in Celtic jewelry is the Claddagh. Honored by a heart held by two hands and a crown, the Claddagh is a universal symbol of love, loyalty and dedication.
Like many Other ancient cultures, the Celts placed a great deal of emphasis on animals. This makes it given the belief that all life on earth is somehow connected. Very similar to the Chinese culture, birds, horses, dogs, fish and snakes all have a special meaning. While many people as St. Patrick drove the snakes from Ireland, the act of hunting the snake was a mere metaphor. The serpent tempted Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden if the metaphor relates to driving the demon out of a land that St. Patrick was trying to convert to Christianity.
