Product Description
Richard Brettell's innovative and beautifully-illustrated account, the latest addition to the acclaimed Oxford History of Art series, explores the works of artists such as Monet, Gauguin, Picasso, and Dali--as well as lesser-known figures--in relation to expansion, colonialism, nationalism and internationalism, and the rise of the museum. Beginning with The Great Exhibition of 1851 in London, Brettell follows the development of the major European avant-garde groups: the Realists, Impressionists, Post-Impressionists, Symbolists, Cubists, and Surrealists. Giving attention to the changing social, economic, and political climate, the book focuses on conditions for the development of modern art such as urban capitalism, modernity, and the accessible image made possible by art museums, temporary exhibitions, lithography, and photography. Brettell examines artists' responses to modernism, including changes in representation, vision, and "the art of seeing." Combining the most recent scholarship with 140 illustrations--75 in full color--the book chronicles the change in art and image itself, from the iconology of new representations of the nude human form to the anti-iconography of "art without 'subject'": landscape painting; text and image; and abstraction. Tracing common themes of representation, imagination, perception, and sexuality across works in a wide range of different media, and offering profuse illustration to bring the changing art forms vividly to life, Modern Art 1851-1929 presents a fresh approach to the fine art and photography of this remarkable era.

Product Description
This informative set contains three complete programs that are illustrated by selected masterpieces of architecture, sculpture and painting and are filmed on location throughout Europe.EARLY CHRISTIAN AND BYZANTINE ARTThis film shows selected masterpieces from this epoch of religious art: the early Christian basilicas of Ravenna with their unique mosaic ornamentation, the dome construction and interior of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, the Cloister of St. Catherine in Sinai with its collection of rare icons, also mid and late Byzantine cruciform churches in Greece and Turkey. The film's central theme is the portrayal of the pantocrator, Christ as the new Ruler of the World, one of the most magnificent creations of Byzantine art which had endured for one and a half thousand years.ROMANESQUE ARTThe restoration of the Roman Empire and the revival of Antiquity by Charlemagne heralded a new age, and was the source of European culture in the Middle Ages. The cloisters of the Benedictine Order were the creators of Romanesque art. Architecture and painting, sculpture, goldsmiths' art and liturgical utensils of this era - the sole purpose of their conception was to serve the church. Even the patronage of the Emperor was purely sacred - great church buildings, not castles, served the task of Imperial representation. In the construction of the Imperial Cathedrals Romanesque architecture expanded into new dimensions. GOTHIC ARTThe birth of the Gothic cathedral in the Ile-de-France, in the heart of France, is the central theme of this film. During this epoch architecture devoted itself to the construction of cathedrals. Chartres is the best and most beautiful example - it conveys the entire art work of the cathedral with its portal sculpture, the glass windows, the interior and exterior. Here the Gothic system of architecture, the construction of pier buttresses and quadrant arches, is displayed in its full glory. The Gothic style expanded across the borders of France to Germany, England and Italy, with each country developing its own variations.

European Art
Which European city has the best art scene & nightlife for young and non-trendy travelors?

A few of my friends (and myself, of course) are planning a trip to Europe this year and were wondering which city is best for late night partying and general carousing? We’re really looking to get into some “trouble” here, but nothing too extreme or illegal. We’re also sort of wanting to avoid anything too hip or trendy and are seeking more of a laid-back, liberal and avante-garde art scene with cool friendly locals…Someone suggested Berlin, another person said it was Amsterdam or Barcelona? Does anyone have any ideas?

If you want the biggest avant garde art scene and great late night partying, Berlin is amazing. You won’t want to leave. Every time I go, I can’t wait to go back as it’s never enough time.
