As many eye-catching, contemporary homes, Northwest, home of the bank Amely Wurmbrand's feeds on a set own page and the beauty of its natural environment. Considering that it is both an artist and interior designer who uses decorative wall tiles as a staple of his work, it is not surprising that the place is a visual playground. The backsplash in kitchen, take a dramatic example, is a kaleidoscopic mosaic tiles gleaming bronze, gray, blues, and ivory, with an occasional splash of red. From afar, it suggests a large city at night random combinations of light burst here, pockets of blue water pooling there. Closely, it is an indecipherable puzzle multi size of circles and squares. Anyway, there is little or no order or rationality on the canvas. Running your fingers along it feels like caressing the rocks of a shallow river.
"I love texture in my work, and tiles can be very artistic and can add interest, "Wurmbrand said, rifling through his boxes of samples of tile and a little kitsch Finish with a glass, some raised in the community, many with busy but well-coordinated color palettes. "Tile is the jewel of the project."
In 1997, when Wurmbrand and her husband Craig Rosenberg, a computer engineer, bought the four flat-1962 indoor bedrooms, the original shared kitchen full of "a kind of double standards Rec Room" with the dining room while the show is concealed behind a barrier mass Sandstone fireplace that blocked the flow. It just did not make sense.
After living in the house for a few years Wurmbrand and Rosenberg began a project in two phases of renovation: remodeling of the interior and adding a whole new wing. In practical design, Wurmbrand asks clients to write an essay describing what they like and dislike about their home, and what they expect out of a remodeling. Wurmbrand wrote for himself, floor plan of mid-century was probably the beginning of his "disgust" list. She and her husband considered several models and, ultimately, made a radical choice. They reversed the layout. The living room became the kitchen. Today, two oblong blocks converge in an angle of 90 degrees. A rectangle used for the entire house, the other has now Wurmbrand workspace and studio Rosenberg lower level. Each is flanked by generous windows that take in the dense forest area and stunning views of Puget Sound.
They kept Building large stone fireplace-N Brady Bunch, but furnished with a much later (while extending the other) to better accommodate the flow traffic and a growing family. Then they blasted the white wall paint to reveal the underlying stone Wilkerson, a material of the East Popular Washington in the 1960s. The view from the front door reveals an open floor plan with a continuous flow through kitchen, dining and living areas.
Artsy touches are everywhere. On the main floor bathroom backsplash tonic a shell and a graceful bowl sink sitting top drawer mahogany evoking a stylish Japanese theme, which Wurmbrand accented with hand painted cherry blossom tree sprawling across the wall Shower: "I would always remember the glory and happiness of spring." Even the hallway is plastered with pictures of his six-year-old son Brandon: "Our new art gallery," she beamed.
Buffer nowhere more visible than in the kitchen Wurmbrand's. "I wanted to make a renovation of the kitchen, but I wanted him to feel as if she had always lived here. I knew I had to use a tile that was a sort of bohemian because something was really wrong time at work and something did not really present at work, "Wurmbrand said." Find the right tiles was really, really difficult because there are so few things that have just been used at the time this house was built, "she added.
Thank you to a recent surge in design manufacturers to produce awareness materials are multiple giving more resources when working with customers now.
But when she moved her remodeling on a tile with a glaze and materials that have been around in the 60s that would still fit with stainless steel cabinets with the latest back-painted glass and double-island several levels and a snack bar topped with honed Crema Marfil counters. As in the rest of his house, pairing establishes a balance between the modern century and mid caps.
Everything is sprinkled with an eclectic mix of styles of period furniture, but in keeping with the theme home much of it is reclaimed or reinvented. "I love the character of period furniture brings, and I think it helps to anchor the piece for the period of the house. Had I left the pieces that I had found, however, the eye would feel overwhelmed. "
Today the house nestled at the end of a long path is far from dated. Key Wurmbrand's straddling the styles past and present, and the result is timeless.
